Is traditional living a thing of the future?

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say series’ such a GBBO and Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas have influenced me into wanting to be a more hands on mum baking cakes and crafting. It’s certainly a lifestyle I’d love to follow if I had more hours in the day. I do however try my best with the time I do have.

A recent servey by Baytree Interiors asked a series of questions to 1,000 UK residents about learning new skills as well as their interior style preferences. They found that a traditional way of living was becoming popular, with participants stating that they had recently learnt or planned to learn some classic skills such as baking, sewing and knitting. The survey also found that people wanted to move away from modern interiors, instead opting for traditional, country or rustic furniture and interior design.

From reusable nappies, to expressing breast milk and crafting hand made thank you cards I am most certainly one of those people. I’ve been learning new skills that would appear to have been popular centuries ago and not necessarily the norm today with so many more convenient ways of doing things. Yet more of us are choosing these traditional methods over modern alternatives.

This includes our home decor. I would rather have a country kitchen adorned in floral prints and pastels to while away the hours baking cupcakes and a gingham arm chair to read books in, as apposed to a sleek black or white high gloss kitchen and leather furniture in my home to watch a 60″ flat screen TV.

I try making home made meals as often as I can as well as baby toys and crocheting. I would certainly have been comfortable living in the past! Becoming a mum has really brought out my crafty side.

What do you think, is traditional living really becoming the norm, are you a traditionalist or do you prefer the modern life?

I like the traditional methods too. I love hand made cards and gifts, they seem so much more personal and so much more effort! I wish I had more hours in the day to do these things more often and bake cakes, too! Those thank you cards are adorable. xx

  • I think I cherry pick a bit of both – I absolutely love baking/cooking when I have time, although I wish I could sew as well as my mum who used to make us clothes when we were little (I can barely get buttons to stay on). But it is nice to live in an era of a few short cuts – I am not a natural crafter, so I know my results aren’t going to be great to display!

In an ideal world, I would love to be totally self-sufficient, I love all the traditionalness that comes with making your own things x

  • I think I am on the border on this, I can like some easy convenience of modern life but then the traditional side for me is more therapeutic.

I am mostly modern but I do like to be traditional in some respects too. It just depends what perspective I am coming from!

  • I think you can have a mix of both. We’ve a modern kitchen but I’ve stacks of cookbooks which I use. I knit and craft and we cook meals from scratch most of the time. I think there’s stages of your life when you stop and contemplate what’s what – sounds like you’re working out what’s right for you. Have fun, and enjoy 🙂

  • Mum in a Nutshell

I’m so with you on this, I’m definitely leaning towards more traditional lifestyle, we’ve been using cloth for a while now.

  • It’s an interesting one isn’t it, I like a lot of the old fashioned values and habits: like card writing instead sending texts and baking instead of just buying stuff!

  • I definitely like a mix of both. I love home cooked food and a cosy, traditional kitchen, but I enjoy my modern conveniences too. You’ve inspired me to go and bake cakes with my children today 🙂
