We have a treat in store for you this Friday afternoon, Rosie Blake, author of the laugh out loud, try not to pee in your pants, How to Get a (Love) Life has stopped by to talk to us all about heroes and villians!

Over to Rosie…

Every book I’ve ever loved so much I wish I could have wiped my memory of it just so I could start again (aka the entire Jilly Cooper collection and Harry Potter 1-7), featured an amazing collection of heroes and villains. Better than that, heroes that start out as villains and then surprise you by being the ultimate hero.

Take Rupert Campbell-Black, the terrible cad who treats women like dirt and venereal disease like it will never happen to him. He roams about arrogantly whipping horses, and ladies, into submission and the reader is left agog. Then enter Taggie, the cloudy haired, long-legged dyslexic, who is a dream in the kitchen and has amazing skin. Over the course of the book, we see the transformation of this rakish rogue into a fiercely loyal man in love. He doesn’t become a wuss, he still treats people appallingly, but he is incredibly kind to our beloved heroine and so in turn we, the reader, love him.

Do I need to go on? I could probably sum up what I’m trying to say in two words. Professor Snape. Where do we even begin with this incredibly well-written character? The man we all love to loathe. The greasy-haired teacher who seems to be out to target Harry Potter from day one at Hogwarts. The dreadful moment when he appears to show his true dark side (I’m desperately trying not to throw in spoilers). But then the gorgeous storyline of a childhood love; another man fiercely loyal to the last who will do anything for that one woman. *pause to sigh and get ‘kerchief*

So there you have it. A couple of fabulous heroes, villains and heroes who have turned villains and back again. I think, overall, women want to read about a man who puts one person first, right? Above all, we all want to hold on to the notion of a monogamous, red-blooded male who still has a fierce personality (and great legs).

Am I right? Or are you shaking your head? Do you have any favourite heroes or villains that you want to gush about to me?

Please do!
