Sicily: An Exceptional Child-friendly Destination for a Family Holiday

Face it. Traveling with children takes a lot of enquiries and decisions before finding that perfect holiday destination with your youthful company. But there’s a place that comes to mind – Sicily! Here’s why.

Beaches and Accommodation

If you’re in Taormina, drop by the beaches of Mazzaro and Mondello near Palermo. Don’t miss San Vito Lo Capo and in Ustica, snorkel as much as you wish in the public beaches. This island is for a water-loving family who wants to swim, surf, dive or simply get a natural tan.

There are many affordable rentals with good amenities scattered around, be it a farm house, an apartment or one of the many Sicily villas with pool. A relaxing unit is just what your family needs after a day’s tour. Imagine that perfect view of the beach!

Theme Parks

What kid does not like a park? Go to Madonie Adventure Park and have a picnic! The kids can go biking, horse riding and play an obstacle course. There is tree climbing, rope ladder walking and slides to entertain you and your children. Visit the Sicily Bio Park in Villagrazia di Cardini or Etna Land with a water park, zoo and dinosaur exhibit.

Castle Hunting

The castles in Cefalù and Mussomeli are very impressive and so are the two castles in Erice. There is also the Castello Orsino in Catania and Castello Maniace in Syracuse. In fact, there are a lot of castles in the island and you might just spot one in the middle of nowhere.

Volcanic Tours

The splendor of Mt. Etna is enough to awe you and your kids especially when they see lava below the cable car ride. You can also go to the summit on a mini bus and have a panoramic view of the east. Plus, there are tours on the steaming craters of the Stromboli and Fossa di Vulcano.

The Salt Pans

Marvel at the great salt pans on the west coast of Sicily. The salt drying under the sun is fascinating for the kids. The collection of windmills is also a wonderful addition. Also, ride a boat and tour the old Phoenician town nearby.

Palermo and Taormina

Shop and peruse around the bustling markets and walk by the medieval structures surrounding Palermo. The Catacombe dei Cappuccini is stunning and the kids just might have some spooky imagination. Take a cable car ride from Mazzaro to Taormina as entertainment for the young ones and tour them in the Greek amphitheatre.

Taste of Sicily

Worry not! There is food for everybody!  The kids will love the ice cream in dozens of flavors! Try the gelato and there’s granita for a hot day. But the exceptional cuisine is something you should not miss. Have some seafood, wine, chocolate and cheese.

The combination of history and nature can be educational and adventurous and Sicily has them both. Surely, you and your kids will have a fantastic time!
